Description

Geographic Information System (GIS) may be said to be a blend of the art and science of cartography with computer technology, giving the user the ability to collect, store, interpret and analyze spatial data. Most often this results in maps, charts and other graphic expressions of the physical characteristics of the world around us, but may also be utilized to produce visualizations and animations depicting complex concepts involving spatial data. If Geography may be referred to as the Science of Place, then GIS may be seen as both the tool and the method for understanding how Place affects our lives.

GIS is also an evolving professional discipline where computer graphics artists and technicians may find stimulating and rewarding careers. Everything from Cartography (map design and publication) to advanced scientific visualization is possible within the framework of GIS. The many applications of GIS include telecommunications, natural resource management, and public safety. Both private companies and local and federal government now rely on GIS for the gathering and processing of spatial data. Everything happens somewhere, and GIS gives individuals and organizations the ability to understand and influence how location may be used to their advantage.
